Plant Pots Technology

We have been hard at work creating beautiful pots for our plants. After bringing in recycled materials from home like plastic bottles, toilet rolls and tin cans, we set to work bring our pot designs to life!

Miss Parker helped us to put holes in the bottom of our bottles and cans so that when we water our plants, the water can drain out through these holes. We learnt that if there is too much water in the soil, the plant will not get enough air and it will die. This is why it is important to have drainage holes.

Some of us have made hanging pots. Because we have designed indoor pots, we needed to find another way to drain our soil because the water will just drip on to the floor if we put holes in them.

We learnt that putting a layer of small stones at the bottom of the pot will allow water to drain out of the soil.

Then we began repotting some of our little gardens into our own pots!

Beans!

We are growing some broad beans in our class as a part of our Inquiry topic for this term. We are excited to see how tall they will grow once they have sprouted.

Our current Social Skills focus is Responsibility. We need to be responsible for our own beans by remembering to water them every day.

Scavenger Hunt

We went on a Scavenger Hunt around the School to find different things around the gardens.

We had to find:

- A leaf with jagged edges:

- A leaf with smooth edges:

A piece of grass that was longer than our hand:

A flower that was smaller than our fingernail:

A seed pod:

A piece of man-made rubbish:

A twig with three branches:

And lots more!

Friday's Encore

Like the rockstars that we are, we had an encore of our Rata and the Waka performance on Friday in front of the whole school! If you would like to watch us again, check out this video:

Rata and the Waka

We are star performers in Rata Whitu! We worked very hard on our Rata and the Waka play this term. Thank you so much for coming to watch us. Here is the video for those who were not able to watch on Thursday.

We were all very excited to be on stage doing our play. Some of us were a little bit nervous too but that didn't stop us getting up there and doing a brilliant job! We should all be very proud of ourselves.

Descriptive Writing and a Quiz for you!

We have been learning about using details in our writing to make it more interesting to read. Details help the person reading our story to picture what we are writing about in their heads.

Last week Miss Parker read a description of a monster that she had drawn to us. As she read the description, we all drew what we thought the monster looked liked. We had to listen carefully to the details so we knew what to draw and what colours to use. After we had drawn these, Miss Parker showed us her monster picture and we saw how close we were.

Wow! We were pretty close! We discussed how we were able to draw a monster that looked close to Miss Parker's because we listened to the details in the writing.

Next, we drew our own monsters. We were challenged to write about them as descriptively as we could.
